Gary Graham (Star Trek, Alien Nation) stars in the TV pilot Dead End City, TV’s homage to Sin City.
Looks like a hard-core, zombie-fest in the extreme. It actually looks like the major usage of green screen has paid off. It gives it an ‘unreal’ and almost comic book effect. Film noir?

There’s a sneak-peek of the pilot below:

Thanks to Jeff Varga (the director).

Series synopsis and DVD information, plus win a box set of Kyle XY Declassified on DVD.

DISCOVER KYLE XY: DECLASSIFIED ON DVD FROM 4 AUGUST 2008.

The OC meets Smallville in the explosive BBC2 teen drama Kyle XY: Declassified which is available to own on DVD this August.

This gripping American teen soap opera come sci-fi mystery show has attracted a cult following after a prime time Saturday night TV slot and is set to win the hearts and minds of more fans following its DVD release.

So who is Kyle XY? We first meet the hunky hero (Matt Dallas) wandering naked through a forest on the outskirts of Seattle. Unable to speak and without any memory – and curiously no belly button – Kyle is eventually picked up by the authorities and placed in a juvenile detention centre.

It’s there Kyle meets his future foster mother – social worker Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre - Bones, Numb3rs) who takes pity on him and invites him to live with her.

The plot thickens at home with the Tragers. Though arriving mute with little knowledge or recognition of his surroundings, Kyle quickly masters the English language, memorises the encyclopaedia effortlessly and shows astounding athletic abilities.

But while Kyle’s mental and physical strengths eclipse human capabilities, he’s baffled by family life, high school and the social norms and nuances of growing up as a teenager in modern America.

Struggling to acclimatise to his new life, Kyle embarks on a quest to discover his biological parents. But the closer he gets to unravelling clues the more questions arise; who is the mysterious man following him? Why doesn’t he have a belly button? And is he even human?

Kyle XY Declassified contains all 10 episodes of the first series along with an alternate pilot episode, an extended version of the season finale “Endgame”, and audio commentaries by the cast and crew.

Get under the skin of the most explosive teen TV show when Kyle XY: Declassified hits DVD this August.

ARTISTS : Mercedes Altuna, Madi Boyd, David Chalkley, Vincenzo Di Maria, Lewis Hayward, Caroline Lambard, Jayne Lloyd, Liz murfitt, Adrian Navarro, Silviu Pascalin, Suzan Swale, Matthew Swift, Andrea Tyrimos, Jane Webb and Deon Winter.

Illumini is supported by Mathmos, who will be displaying a range of their latest products also supported by Surelight Glowsafe and the Glass bar

An electrifying new exhibition with a difference, starting with a opening night on the 4th Sept, which is complimented with a full evening of free entertainment. Light shows, circus acts and performance artists, working with illumination taking place through out the crypt. This is no PV night, this is an evening where everybody is welcome, Illumini will not just showcase art it will entertain, introducing all communities that may not normally visit the arts to a different approach.

Illumini brings together a variety of artists, all sharing a passion for the subject of light. Set in the famous St Pancras crypt, these impressive pieces of artwork come to life in this desolate and unsettling environment. Come along to experience the illuminatory and dazzling effect this diverse collection of artwork has on the crypt’s dark environment.

Travel down abandoned corridors and venture into secret recesses to explore a wide variety of artwork. The pieces range from photographs and paintings depicting light, to sculptural works that literally glow; at once transforming the crypt’s murky and shadowy atmosphere like never before.

Jane says a few words:

I am a London based mixed media artist that primarily works in glass and lighting for my Commissioned work. For my mixed media installation and sculptural work, recycled computer and electronic components are assimilated. The simplicity and complexity of circuit board patterns are a strong influence along with imagery of robotics.

I graduated in Glass & Fine Art Post Grad Certificate, at Central St Martins in 2006 and had a piece on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I have also been sort listed for the ‘Inspire by Awards’ & ‘Pride in the House’ and the ‘Future Design Awards’ and a guest artist at the London Sci- fi film festival . My most recent project im organising and exhibiting in, called Illumini, will be an illumination extravaganza which will be held in a grade 1 listed crypt in London with 15 artists in September 08

At present my experimental sculptures and installations are influenced by technological advancements in the area of prosthetics and cybernetics. For example, the rapid human advancement in cybernetic technology, at the Southampton University “The Southampton Hand”.

Even though my art is perceived as science fiction, it is however heavily influenced by everyday science fact! After all Science fiction plays a important roll in the science of the future.
We use tools such as computers and internet which extends our visual memory and other powers beyond what our human bodies are capable of.

Initially technology was created as a time saving device and memory aids. However, we now appear to be co-dependent on them.

Is technology acting like a virus destroying our humanity and turning us into cybernetic humanoids!
Our perceptions are that technology is speed, efficiency and enhancement. The mobile phone is like a portable life support machine, the average person already looking like a cyborg with a blue tooth attachment to their ear, a digital watch strapped to their wrist and plugged into an Ipod.

It does make you wonder how close we are to becoming cyborgs already!

Win one of three copies of the modern, noir, sci-fi classic, Dark City - Director's Cut.

Win The Director’s Cut Of Dark City On DVD

Golden Globe winner Kiefer Sutherland (24, Stand By Me), Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist, A Knight’s Tale), William Hurt (The Incredible Hulk, A History of Violence) and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (Little Children, A Beautiful Mind) star in the visually stunning, modern noir sci-fi classic Dark City. This is the eagerly awaited never-before-seen director’s cut of the film which is being released by Entertainment In Video on retail DVD and Blu-Ray with a host of all-new extras on 4th August.

Directed, written and produced by acclaimed sci-fi director Alex Proyas (I, Robot), Dark City finds John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) waking up naked and alone in a strange hotel room, suffering from what appears to be amnesia.

He is being hunted by police inspector Frank Bumstead (William Hurt) for a series of brutal murders that he knows nothing about; is being tailed by a mysterious doctor (Keifer Sutherland) and is being sought by a woman called Emma (Jennifer Conelly) who claims to be his wife but of whom he has no recollection.

On the run from Bumstead, Murdoch sets out to discover his past and with it the mysteries of the city; a place shrouded in perpetual darkness with no known ways to leave and whose inhabitants fall comatose at midnight.

Bumstead eventually catches up with Murdoch, starts to re-think who might be responsible for the murders and decides to team-up with him so that the two of them can try and unravel the mysteries of Dark City together. It’s while trying to re-discover Murdoch’s past life that the pair stumble across a fiendish underworld controlled by a group of powerful beings known as The Strangers who possess the ability to put people to sleep and alter the city and its inhabitants.

Enlisting the help of the mysterious Dr. Daniel Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland), the three are forced to find a way to stop The Strangers before the city and Murdoch are both destroyed…

Dark City has a 15 certificate and a running time of approximately 100 minutes.

Win a copy of FIDO on DVD, just to find out what happened after the generic zombie attack, and to put your poor addled mind at rest.

Win A Copy Of FIDO on DVD

What Actually Happened After The Attack Of The Zombies? (pick any genre film).

Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the ‘50s, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbour…. and rotting zombies deliver the mail. Funny, frightening and just a little bit twisted, the multi award winning Fido is now released on DVD by Entertainment In Video, to rent on 9th June and to buy on 23rd June.

A boy-and-his-dog movie for grown ups, Fido boasts a great ensemble cast including Carrie-Anne Moss (Disturbia, The Matrix trilogy), legendary stand up Billy Connolly (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events), Dylan Baker (Spider-Man 3) and Tim Blake Nelson (Meet the Fockers).

Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with a craving for human flesh. A war began, pitting the living against the dead.

In the ensuing revolution, the corporation ZomCon was created and succeeded in defeating the legions of undead. They domesticated them, making them into industrial workers and servants.

ZomCon would like the people of Willard to believe they have everything under control…but do they? At least one person doesn’t think so.

ZomCon’s head of security has moved in across the street from eleven-year-old Timmy Robinson (K’Sun Ray), who is already a little suspicious of this newly created world.

Timmy’s mother (Moss) however refuses to be the only housewife on the block who doesn’t have a zombie as a servant. When she brings a six-foot tall model home, Timmy discovers in him a new best friend whom he immediately names Fido (Connolly).

Even though Dad (Baker) has a bad case of zombie-phobia - he has never recovered from having killed his own zombie father - Timmy is determined to keep Fido, even if he does have a nasty habit of eating the neighbours.

Sometimes, it takes a dead man to teach us all what it means to be alive….

Fido has a 15 certificate (TBC) and a running time of approximately 91 minutes.

Rental Disc:
Cat Number: EDR4169
Price: £35.00

Retail Disc:

Retail bonus features:

So to get your hands on a copy of the absolutely hilarious FIDO, just answer this simple question:

The main character in FIDO is:

A) A dog called Fido
B) A car called Fido
C) A transformer called Fido
D) A zombie called Fido

Black Static’s Dark Place
(Number 3 Out Feb 2007).

Matthew Holness AKA Gareth Marenghi of the eponymous cult TV show has a story in Black Static 3, which has just gone to the printer and will be out, early, in February.

The Toad and I” by Matthew Holness. The author is a “A real life TV star, most famous for his Gareth Marenghi character (absolutely brilliant — hope you’ve seen it)” and he won the 2001 Perrier Comedy Award, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s top prize.

Also two debut stories, The Morning After, is Carole Johnstone’s first author credit anywhere. Carole is a Scot now living in Essex.

Seth Skorkowsky’s The Mist of Lichthafen is his first story sale but he’s since sold other stories and they saw the light of publication before there was space for him in BS 3.

16th in Interzone’s all time list of fiction contributors (13 stories) is Alexander Glass and here he is in BS 3 with The Pit. He’s back with a story about depression, and it’s good. Stylistically different from his earlier stories let’s hope it’s the first of many.

Ian Faulkner was first published in Crimewave and has another story coming up in CW 10. The Difference Between is Ian R. Faulkner’s first for any of TTA’s Horror, SF and fantasy genre publications.

The Sentinels by rising star Tony Richards.

Another rising star is Will McIntosh who closes the BS 3 fiction list with The Fantasy Jumper. Will is no stranger to Interzone, he appeared in IZ 200 with Soft Apocalypse and has featured twice more since that issue.

And, the editor says, all seven story titles begin with the definite article and that’s enough to make BS 3 a themed issue, according to him.

David Gentry is again responsible for the art.

NOTE Interzone and Crimewave are now available as downloads for all types of E reader devices from Fictionwise. Keep an eye out for Black Static on the same link.

Get to drive a 21st Century prototype of the Star Wars Landspeed Vehicle.

Ever fancied trying out the closest vehicle to a Landspeeder we have in the 21st Century? Suspended a few inches above ground, putting the pedal to the metal and experiencing the thrill over all kinds of terrain?

Well, now you can, courtesy of Hovpod Surrey. They specialise in the luxury personal leisure hovercraft.

The Hovpod is an experience you won’t ever forget. You can use it to raise your profile and attendance at a promotional or corporate event (which we all know can be boring). It’s a fun, safe and exhilirating ride which uses a mechanism of a cushion of air (AVC - Air Cushion Vehicle) which enables it to navigate almost all surfaces.

For example, it can easily rocket over grass, gravel, tarmac, ice, water, snow, sand and mud. Land/Water transition is seamlessly smooth because, of course, the Hovpod is actually always sitting on a cushion of fresh air, floating 9 inches above whatever surface is below.

Today it is often in environmentally sensitive areas that the hovercraft shines the most. It won’t damage the ground. There’s no wheels to churn up the ground and no propellors to injure any marine creatures. A good example on their site is of the Hovpod being driven over eggs; they are untouched.

Imagine the look on student’s faces when the college or school hires one for educational purposes. They certainly never had anything like that when I went!

The hovpod will not damage the ground

And the reason is simple: If you look underneath the hovercraft skirt there’s nothing but fresh air. There are no wheels to churn up the ground, and no propellors to injure any marine creatures.

Darren, the coordinator, told us, “We were invited to a black tie dinner at a local rugby club. We gave experience rides from 6:30pm to 11:30pm. We tried to leave, but kept getting getting asked to stay. The organisers even turned on the floodlights for us to fly over their rugby pitches. And what was very impressive was women in their ballgowns wanting to experience the thrill in their twos!”

The Hovpod is a fantastic addition to any event, very safe, and certainly raises the profile. Hovpod Surrey also supplies owner support and hovpod maintenance.

It isn’t a Landspeeder exactly, but it’s probably the closest you’d get to with our current technology.

From Richard Kelly, creator of (one of my favourite films) Donnie Darko.

“HAVE A NICE APOCALYPSE!” or “THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS, NOT WITH A WHIMPER BUT WITH A BANG!”

I watched the checkdisk, my brain went to mush. And I could quite easily imagine that is where the above quotes come from, the mushing and/exploding of the brain. As Richard Kelly apparently said, “You need to watch it twice to unlock its mysteries”. Yeah, no brainer really, it’s like a weird comic with so many strands and freaky things all at once it makes me think maybe he made it for his own amusement - a lets see how many ideas and effects and storylines and actors and other such things we can have in a large viewing timeframe-, and forgot there were people who were looking forward to it, to having to pay to watch it, to at least get some semblence of a cohesive story from watching it.

I’ll be putting myself through 2 hrs 25 minutes in the next day or so, and hopefully will be able to work out what the heck was going on.

By the way, the above doesn’t mean I dislike it, it’s just a lot for the five senses to take in. I think two of mine shutdown after about an hour and a half, so, once they’re bolstered up and recovered, I’ll re examine the film.

Until then, here’s some info to whet your appetite…

DEBUTS ON DVD 31 MARCH 2008

Universal Pictures (UK) will release Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales to own and rent on DVD 31 March 2008. The highly anticipated follow up feature to cult favourite Donnie Darko stars Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Geller, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore and Miranda Richardson.

Writer and director Richard Kelly’s debut feature film Donnie Darko grew from cult status into a phenomenal smash hit when released on DVD. And DVD is the perfect way to experience his new film, as its multi-layered story demands repeat viewings and the crystal clear picture and awesome sound quality will further heighten the impact of the outstanding special effects and excellent soundtrack that includes music specially composed for the film by Moby. The film will be accompanied by the insightful documentary that runs for over 30 minutes, USIdent TV – Survielling the Southland (The Making of Southland Tales).

Similar to Kelly’s groundbreaking, unconventional debut feature, Southland Tales is a multilayered vision which defies categorisation. A visceral experience, with stunning production values, special effects and a heavy nod to pop culture, the film is part dark comedy, part sci-fi, part thriller, part fairy tale, and even part musical and it is the singular vision of one man.

Los Angeles, 2008: The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Southland Tales is an epic story narrated by Iraq veteran Private Pilot Abilene (Justin Timberlake) and is set over the course of three days centered in Los Angeles that culminate in an apocalyptic 4th July climax. Together with Abilene (Timberlake), the large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action star stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

Richard Kelly comments, “What is it all about in the end? I think it’s about where our country is going, our current dilemma when you’re talking about alternative fuel, terrorism, our civil liberties being taken away from us, and the potential effects of environmental degradation on human behaviour, neurological responses, global warming. You know, there’s a lot going on here.”

Grant Hicks is a painter with a slight difference, he paints Cosmic Ceilings, scenes from outer space onto mainly bedroom ceilings.

Using specialist glow paint (which is actually invisible during the day) he creates stars, shooting stars, blackholes and other such images. These ceilings can only be seen in the dark. They look truly amazing as they have a 3D effect, and you feel as though you are actually looking up to the stars.

He can also do themed ceilings such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and fantasy scenes (images of which you can see below).

He also trains people to do this for a living as self-employed ‘Startists’.

Our favourite is the universe scene, as it will never go out of date; well, the universe is pretty old, and still funky.

Creative writing is not immune to information technology. The literary equivalent to music’s Ipod is the ebook reader and there are many portable devices into readers can download an electronic version of a novel or magazine. Alternatives to specific ebooks are PDAs, laptops and some mobile phones.

Fictionwise (http://www.fictionwise.com/) is a US website which formats books and magazines for web distribution to e book readers such as the ‘Amazon Kindle’ or ‘Sony Reader’. They take a file from the publisher and convert it to the multitude of formats needed to ensure all E book readers and many ‘mobile’ devices can display the text.

Fictionwise sell the files through their website though publishers can also do it themselves via their own, or retailer, sites.

‘MultiFormat’ ebooks are not encrypted and paying for one type of download format allows free access to other formats of that ebook. So customers who update to a new e reader or mobile device do not lose access to their library.

TTA Press’s (http://ttapress.com/) short fiction publications are Interzone, Black Static and Crimewave. The first two are magazines with original short fiction and non-fiction articles and the latter is a regular collection of short crime fiction. Crimewave 9 Transgressions has been on sale at Fictionwise since October 2007 and now Interzone magazine is available as an ebook.

Readers can purchase the magazine in single issues or as a one-year subscription here The e publication of the magazine began with the three most recent issues of Interzone: 211, 212, & 213. Future issues will appear alongside the publication of the print edition. At this time, there are no plans to offer any issues before IZ 211.

At present the e edition is not available direct from the TTA or T3A site.

If you’re not familiar with Interzone (shame on you!) then read past reviews and articles on Interzone.

Business Objects XI Migration: When not only creating a universe correctly is important, but moving your whole infrastructure from one area to another is critical.

Business Objects XIR2 Migration

Genre writers are forever creating their own universes, which sometimes sit side by side. Sometimes, the key to a successful story is how the objects (people, places etc) interact with each other, and ultimately are moved from one place to another.

This post is really self indulgence to some extent - because this is what I do for a living. As well as creating universes and even linked universes (think parallel universes), there comes a time when an infrastructure has to be migrated from an earlier version (say, v5 or v6) to a new platform (XIR2 or XI3.0).

This can pose problems; from planning, through execution, to testing and finally to go live.

You need to be confident that the migration has gone correctly, that you’ve taken everything you need across (reports, users, universes), and that the new security model has been adopted correctly.

Migration is a good time to assess what your legacy systems look like. Are all universes needed, are all reports needed? What preperations and steps need to be taken.

If this is something you’re interested in talking about, then feel free to contact me on the feedback form, making sure you mention Business Objects Migration.

Q) Walter asks, I once saw a sci-fi flick when I was young. It was in the early 70’s. I had to do with scientist trying to creat a view screen into the future.

There were also some robots that helped them. They looked pretty cool with tubes and things. There were also mutants above ground.

At the end the mutants made it below ground and the scientist realized that their view screen was really a time portal into a new geneation. They escaped through the screen into the future.

What was the name of this movie? Help.

A) Do you know the answer? If you have an idea, post a comment!

What Would You Do If You Accidently Found Someone Crying Out For Help On A Hidden Website?

Chris Purnell, is writer/director of new Alternate Reality Game entitled Gun Shots By Computer - Part 1. The films where produced in Scotland and feature two rising stars of the Scottish acting world, Shian Denovan (Night Is Day) and Claire Dicarlo.

He says this about GSBC1:

Cinema goers are a dying breed and due to spiraling cost, cinemas will soon be a thing of the past. I believe there has to be a future to film, and I think the Internet will play a major role in that. Already people download movies from the Internet instead of going to the cinema; people would rather see a film for free. I understand that, as I am one of those people. So to reach out to those people you have to make the whole experience of watching a film more interesting for them. You have to give them a reason not to just download it. I believe we have created the format to do that.

Our web based films are set in an Orwellian world in the year 2032 which parallels our own
present. The story begins behind the website, HMV, where one girl gives a direct address to the camera done through the style of video blogs.

The story is that Sarah’s friends and family see her as a crazy paranoid person. But is she? After Sarah stops taking her pills she becomes convinced that she is living in an Orwellian nightmare. She believes her pills to be a form of government control. But is this all in Sarah’s head? Is she really just paranoid and the pills are there only to keep her chemical imbalance from becoming worse? Sarah begins to keep a video diary to warn people in other countries of the impending doom that will befall them.

The story branches from Sarah’s website to other websites which are revealed to drive the plot forward. These sites are: www.xxxxxxxxxxx.com, www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com and www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.org This allows viewers to actively participate in the story. (I’ve took the urls out, as it would be too easy to jump the gun, and ruin the creative flow. - Rich)

From the moment you enter Sarah’s site you are confronted by a government warning that will hopefully spark viewers intrigue. The page you then see used to divert attention away from what she is doing. When clicked on, the next page to open will establish that we are in a hidden website and what you are about to see is very secret. When the user enters to the next page the first film will begin to let the viewer know where they are and what they are about to see.

The site was launched 72 hours ago and has already received 4500 hits. We believe this to show that the format works and it is causing a stir.

This format will let people interact with the film and instead of just being a viewer; they will feel like an active participant. Making them jump through all these hoops makes a game of the film, and when they see the final film it will somehow feel more rewarding.
