This series is probably the best example of the modern fantasy genera ever made for television. The writing is superb and intelligent, the acting outstanding and there is a subtle humour that runs through it that grows naturally from the situation. Anyone with a brain, an imagination, and an ability to embrace the idea of a world that runs under different physical rules than our own, but yet is internally consistent, should like this series. The books the series is loosely based on are also quite extraordinary, but I’d suggest viewing them as a separate universe, as there is little crossover save in the basic characters and underlying universe.
Along with this, Valerie Cruz, who plays Lt. Murphy, is very easy on the eyes, and she portrays a strong, intelligent woman with an underlying vulnerability, that is very human and endearing, to perfection. If you like smart, capable women Lt. Connie Murphy is extremely desirable, and it is a pleasure to visit with her as you watch the episodes.
The rest of the cast are equally brilliant, just being a straight guy I’m less inclined to wax poetic about them.
A good comparison for the level of writing is the first season and a half of Andromeda which is little surprise because the brilliant Robert Hewitt Wolfe was at the writing helm for the golden age of that show as well.
In short, in my opinion the only reason this show hasn’t gone on for an extended run is it was a bit too high brow for the mouth breathers in the audience. If you can walk and chew gum at the same time, it is one of those rare gems that TV occasionally spits out, well worth the price of buying the DVD.
