What Does A Scanner See?
“A Scanner Darkly” is set in suburban Orange County, California in the future. It imagines a paranoid world in which it seems two of every 10 Americans has been hired by the government to spy on the other 8 — in the name of national security and drug enforcement. When one reluctant government recruit (Reeves) is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a journey into the absurd, where outsourced government contractors largely define the social construct, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode, and where not even his girlfriend can be trusted. It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on Dick’s own experiences.

When Dick wrote A Scanner Darkly, he was going through one of his most paranoid stages. It was a reflection of how he felt, that he was constantly under surveillence (by whoever, Dick thought maybe the FBI). He talked about this period, and he talked about how would it be possible to be under surveillence for 24hrs, because the watchers would have to review the tapes. 24 hrs to watch 24hrs of Philip K Dick.
This is one PKD book I haven’t read (suprisingly), but it is on my list now, so as I can get a low down on the story and maybe get an idea of what to expect with the movie. One thing to say is though, what’s with the animationesque images? Is that throughout the film? We shall see.. (I’ve got to say I’m secretly excited about it - let’s hope it pays off).
Because the movie stars Keanu Reeves I hope that reviewers won’t try and draw parallels to Matrix just because he’s in it. They are completely seperate entities and should be treated as such.
And I think Philip K Dick would be pretty excited over it too. And hell, Keanu and the whole cast should feel honoured they’re part of the Philip K Dick story. It’s the SF film Keanu has been dreaming of. I betchya.
